Kuyt suffers shoulder injury

Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt has picked up a shoulder injury during training with the Netherlands, according to Dutch boss Bert van Marwijk.

Van Marwijk claimed the player had “strained and possibly torn ligaments in his shoulder” after falling awkwardly at the ADO Den Hague stadium.

Kuyt, 30, is out of Tuesday’s Euro 2012 qualifier with Finland, although the extent of the damage is not yet clear.

A Liverpool spokesman would not comment as Kuyt was on international duty.

Carra Thanks Fans

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has thanked both former and current Anfield stars for appearing in his testimonial.

The Reds faced Everton on Saturday in the 32-year-old’s tribute match, and recorded a 4-1 victory.

The game featured former hero turned villain in now-Manchester United player Michael Owen, as well as Steven Gerrard, who was released by Fabio Capello from the England squad following Friday’s win over Bulgaria to appear in the opening ten minutes.

Reserves held in season opener

Liverpool Reserves were held to a goalless draw by Wigan in their first Barclays Premier Reserve League North outing of 2010-11 on Wednesday afternoon.

The game – which was switched from an evening kick-off at Prenton Park to an afternoon clash at the Academy – turned out to be a low-key affair.

McMahon had to start the season without the likes of Andre Wisdom, Jonjo Shelvey and Michael Ngoo, who are all away with various England youth teams.

Plessis signs for Panathinaikos

Greek powerhouses Panathinaikos have snapped up Damien Plessis from Liverpool for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old Frenchman departs Anfield after being deemed surplus to requirements by new Reds boss Roy Hodgson.

Plessis did figure in Rafa Benitez’s first-team plans during his time on Merseyside, but even then was unable to hold down a regular role.

He managed just eight senior appearances for Liverpool in three years, scoring one goal.

Insua joins Galatasaray on loan

The 21-year-old full-back has been at Liverpool for the past four years, having joined as a youngster from Boca Juniors.

However, he struggled to break into the side and today’s signing of Paul Konchesky by the Anfield club put another hurdle in his path.

“Galatasary announce that Argentinian Emiliano Insua has joined from Premier League club Liverpool on a one-year loan with a purchase option agreement,” Galatasaray said on their website. Insua made 44 appearances for Liverpool in total, the bulk of them coming last season.

Reds complete Konchesky deal

Liverpool have today completed the signing of Paul Konchesky on a four-year contract.

The 29-year-old full-back moves to Anfield from Fulham after agreeing terms with the Reds and passing a medical.

Youngsters Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kacaniklic have made the switch from Anfield to Craven Cottage as part of the deal.

Konchesky has been allocated the number 3 shirt in Roy Hodgson’s squad.

Highlights: West Brom

Liverpool 1-0 West Brom

Liverpool 1-0 West Brom

Spain striker Fernando Torres volleyed in to give an unconvincing Liverpool victory over West Brom at Anfield.

Torres struck his first goal of the season by clinically converting a Dirk Kuyt cross from the edge of the box.

The Spaniard was denied a second when Baggies keeper Scott Carson blocked his far post shot at point-blank range.

The Reds were denied a late penalty for an apparent Gonzalo Jara handball before the visitors had James Morrison red-carded for a tackle on Torres.

Mascherano finally seals Barcelona move

Javier Mascherano stated that joining FC Barcelona is a dream move for him after arriving in the Ciutat Contal on Saturday ahead of a medical and penning his contract at Camp Nou.

The Argentinian midfielder is set to seal a transfer from Liverpool and he was evidently delighted as he posed for photographs before speaking to Barça TV. “I am pleased and proud to be forming a part of a team that has won everything,” he explained. Mascherano never had any doubt that when he left Anfield this summer that Barcelona would be his favoured destination and now he is on the verge of joining he is just taking it all in.

Match Preview – West Brom

Liverpool will hope to have striker Fernando Torres and captain Steven Gerrard back after both were rested for the Europa League trip to Trabzonspor.

Midfielder Joe Cole serves the second game of a three-match ban.

West Brom will be without defender Marek Cech for at least three weeks with a fractured metatarsal.

Midfielder Jerome Thomas, defender Joe Mattock and striker Ishmael Miller will all miss the trip to Anfield through injury.

Liverpool sign Raul Meireles

Liverpool have moved quickly to replace Javier Mascherano by agreeing a £10.7m package with Porto tonight for the Portugal international Raul Meireles.

Meireles, one of Portugal’s more impressive players in the World Cup, is understood to have agreed personal terms and, if everything goes according to plan, the deal will be completed over the weekend, dependent on the 27-year-old passing a medical examination.

Konchesky set for Reds medical

Fulham defender Paul Konchesky will undergo a medical at Liverpool this weekend.

Reds manager Roy Hodgson confirmed earlier this week he had spoken to his former club over a possible move for the left-back.

And 29-year-old Konchesky, a regular during Hodgson’s time at Craven Cottage, now appears likely for a reunion with his former boss on Merseyside. The stopper, a twice-capped England international, arrived at Fulham from West Ham three years ago.

Trabzonspor 1-2 Liverpool (agg 1-3)

Liverpool secured their place in the group stages of the Europa League courtesy of a win at Trabzonspor.

The Turkish side drew level 1-1 on aggregate when Teofilo Gutierrez slotted in from a Gustavo Colman shot.

David Ngog headed wide from six yards for the Reds but they got a crucial away goal when Giray Kacar put a Glen Johnson cross into his own net.

Dirk Kuyt completed the win when he slotted in after Daniel Pacheco’s shot had been parried into his path.
