Wolves owner Steve Morgan has implied Liverpool made a mistake when hesitating over his investment before eventually accepting George Gillett and Tom Hicks’ offer.
The Merseyside-born businessman abandoned interest in his hometown club in 2004 after ‘indecision’ from the Reds’ board.
Gillett and Hicks then took charge at Anfield three years later, while Morgan bought out Sir Jack Hayward at Wolves.
Liverpool’s American co-owners have since received heavy criticism for failing to build a new stadium amid significant debt.
Morgan does not believe that would be the case if his approach had been accepted, saying: “I was going to put at the time up to £70million investment into the club.
“It would have been cash into the club. It would have pretty much reduced the debt and got the debt down to nil.”
Liverpool’s debt has been estimated at £237million and chief executive Christian Purslow has been working on securing outside investment.
The club have to pay interest on their debt, with Morgan adding: “If I’d have been there, there wouldn’t have been that interest bill.”
